AI in AEC Summers School 2024 is a one-week deep dive into applications of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) specifically tailored for Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC)!

Join us for a 1-week deep dive into applications of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) specifically tailored for architecture, engineering and construction (AEC)! How can buildings, structures and objects be designed and built with AI, ML and DL? Use computer vision and robots to learn from construction sites to build the future, better. We will cover a range of topics including generative AI, machine perception, forward and inverse design, and more.

We are honoured and excited to announce the 4th RILEM International Conference on Concrete and Digital Fabrication (Digital Concrete 2024). The DC 2024 will take place in Germany and will be hosted by the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 277 “Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC)”, the Technische Universität Braunschweig and the Technical University of Munich.

The conference is scheduled from 4th to 6th September 2024 and will be held in Munich.

In addition, pre-conference PhD and industry workshops will be organised in Braunschweig.

DC 2024 is a ‘must attend’ event for researchers, engineers, architects as well as foresighted individuals from industry, politics and organizations to share and discuss the latest technological innovations within the AEC sector. The conference will provide a platform for the key developments in the field of digital fabrication in construction, ranging from additive manufacturing with concrete, metal, wood, clay, fibres and other innovative materials, to sustainable digital workflows from design to fabrication. DC 2024 aims to present the latest scientific findings alongside the latest industrial developments.

We look forward to welcoming you to Munich and Braunschweig in the late summer of 2024.

Programme

The very first AdvanceAEC Autumn School will lay the foundation for an annually recurring format. This year’s AdvanceAEC Autumn School is hosted by IntCDC and will be part of the Stuttgart Week of Advancing AEC.

The autumn school 2022 is aimed at early career researchers, e.g. master students, PhD students and postdocs from the partner institutions of the AdvanceAEC network.
In the parallel full-day workshops on Tuesday, organized by members of the partner institutions, young scientists will have the opportunity to explore theoretical concepts, test practical skills and become familiar with manufacturing processes, programming languages or computer programs. The 2022 courses will include social sciences, computer science and computation, concrete design, carbon concrete structures, robotics and manufacturing or participation in the CRC 1244 conference.
Results of the workshops will be presented publicly on Wednesday.

The AdvanceAEC Autumn School will also enable young scientists to get to know each other and to network with members of the partner organizations. On the one hand, networking sessions on Wednesday morning in the areas of equal opportunity, start-up supporting measures, funding opportunities of the EIC, a poster session for networking among doctoral students, and a workshop on career development specifically designed for postdocs and senior research associates (pre-professorship) will be offered. On the other hand, a social program provides opportunities for informal networking.

The workshops of the AAEC Autumn School 2022

The workshops are organized by the AdvanceAEC partner institutes and led by members of the respective research associations. The workshops are thematically subdivided and originate from the following areas: Social sciences | robotics | the interface between architecture and informatics | concrete design | carbon concrete structures |adaptive skins and structures | computation | machine learning.
The aim is that employees of different partner institutes participate in the respective workshops. In this way, it is possible to gain insight into areas outside one’s own discipline, to get to know each other and to exchange ideas.
Unless otherwise indicated, all workshops will take place on Tuesday, 11. 10. 2022 from 09:00 am to 06:00 pm.

The networking sessions at the AdvanceAEC Autumn School 2022

The AdvanceAEC Autumn School sessions aim at enabling young scientists to get to know each other and to network with members of the partner organizations on the one hand by workshops and a poster session and on the other hand by providing a social program that offers opportunities for informal networking.
The AdvanceAEC Autumn School sessions aim to promote networking between young researchers from the partner organizations. PhDs may exchange information about their current work. This will be realized in the format of a poster session with the possibility to make appointments via an imprinted QR code including contact details.

A career development workshop has been specifically designed as a supporting measure for postdocs and senior research associates (pre-professorship). On offer are further workshops on equal opportunity and start-up supporting measures.

All networking sessions will take place on Wednesday, 12. 10. 2022 from 09:00 to 11:00 am.

The visiting intcdc networking program (ViNe) is designed to promote mutual acquaintance, interdisciplinary exchange, and cross-disciplinary understanding among researchers in the field of architecture, engineering, and construction. It is aimed at early career researchers, raising awareness of the differences between disciplines, with their specific research questions, ways of thinking and technical terminologies, providing insights into working methods and promoting networking among researchers from different academic backgrounds.

The event takes place in presence in Stuttgart at the Institute of Engineering Geodesy (IIGS)

visiting the engineering geodesy opens with a 30 minutes lecture by Prof. Volker Schwieger on“measuring and processing in different scales and with different accuracy levels: static and kinematic,point-wise and areal measurements: Laser Scanner, Laser Tracker, Robotic Total Stations etc.”

The lecture is followed by a guided tour of the institute and laboratories.

Prof. Volker Schwieger is full professor and director of the Institute of Engineering Geodesy (IIGS)and he was Dean of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy at the University of Stuttgart. He is Principal Investigator and Member of the Early Career Commission of the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC.

He is a leading expert in engineering geodesy. He holds a Dr. h.c. (honorary doctorate) at the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest and is full member of the German Geodetic Commission, where he is Head of the section “Engineering Geodesy”. He is also Honorary member of FIG where he was Chair of the FIG Commission 5 “Positioning and Measurement”.
Prof. Schwieger is also member of the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Geodesy, the Journal of Applied Engineering Science and the Journal of Geodesy and Geoinformation


His research interests are the integration of geodetic measurement techniques into machine and robot guidance and control, area-wise-monitoring and multi-sensor data acquisition as well as kinematic positioning and quality modelling. Throughout his career, Prof. Schwieger has published numerous influential research papers, presenting his findings and insights at conferences and symposiums worldwide. His work has received recognition and acclaim, earning him a distinguished reputation in the geodetic community. He also actively collaborates with industry partners, government agencies, and international research institutions to promote the methodic development and the practical application of geodetic technologies.

The Institute of Engineering Geodesy (IIGS)

at the University of Stuttgart is a leading institution dedicated to advancing the field of geodesy and its application in engineering. The institute’s primary focus lies in the precise measurement and analysis of local and regional geometric properties, with a particular emphasis on the interactions between geodetic systems and neighboring disciplines. The main research areas at the IIGS are location (kinematic / static position determination), analysis of building processes, measurements for construction machine and robot control, construction monitoring, transport telematics, process and quality modeling, digital road map and map-based positioning as well as comprehensive data acquisition. The team at IIGS specializes in monitoring and analyzing structural deformations, ensuring infrastructure safety. The institute also provides comprehensive education in engineering geodesy and geo-informatics and collaborates with industry and research partners to foster innovation in geodetic technologies.

“Methodological aspects of historic hanging models in comparison with the work of Anton Gaudi and Eladio Dieste.”

Will take place on

Thursday, 21/09/2023 at 6pm in the ILEK tent.

A brief summary of the lecture:

Prof. Tomlow explores the culmination of structural form finding in Gaudí’s Colonia Güell church in 1900 and his use of the catenary to optimise arch shapes. It also discusses Eladio Dieste’s invention of Cerámica Armada (brick shells) in 1947, his use of sustainable techniques and his architectural achievements, including the Cristo Obrero Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After the lecture, we invite you to join us for a small get-together. There will be snacks and drinks while you have the opportunity to talk and socialise with all the participants. This will be a wonderful opportunity to share ideas about the topic and make new connections.
