Abstract

How to advance design tools and processes in the domain of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) especially for the early design phase, where the biggest impact can be achieved  – that’s the main research question addressed by the SFB “Advanced Computational Design”. Though exerting substantial environmental, cultural and economic influence on our society AEC is still among the least digitized industries. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field, on the other hand, is highly innovative, creating digital design tools well-founded in basic research. But these tools often lack relevant domain knowledge, thus hardly meeting designers’ needs, limiting their broad acceptance.  With a strong multi- and interdisciplinary team, we have been working on bridging this gap by connecting architecture, engineering, mathematics and computer science. We linked tools for sketching, material and structural modeling, geometric and kinematic paneling to innovative VR design communication, including haptic feedback and realistic lighting. We will extend these connections (with particular focus on sustainability) to a rapid prototyping design process with immediate feedback for complex designs that cannot be handled by current methods
Jointly, in eight sub-projects, the Center for Geometry and Computational Design at TU Wien, researchers from the University of Innsbruck and TU Graz address open problems in AEC and other fields of the creative industries.
