Lecture Abstract

We are rapidly entering an era in which human-centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems will play an increasing role in making time and safety critical decisions that impact lives. People and machines will jointly monitor data streams to make data-driven decisions as a team. AI systems will monitor real-time data feeds about patients, predict critical events like heart failure, and make recommendations about how caregivers could intervene. Systems will monitor environmental conditions such as air and water quality, alerting authorities to problems before they harm human health. AI will monitor factories, making recommendations to increase efficiency and resilience, and humans will monitor and cooperate with robots in a collaborative manufacturing process. Revolutionary changes to cyber-human data monitoring systems have the potential to profoundly transform the ways people work. Well-designed systems will reduce cognitive burden and the need for constant human vigilance, empowering people to focus on strategic decisions. People will come to expect computing systems to be proactive and cooperative partners in monitoring time and safety critical situations, rather than reactive alarm generators. Monitoring is challenging from both human and system perspectives because of the streaming data and the ongoing nature of the activity. From a human perspective, there is tension between the desire for monitoring to be a peripheral task and the need for rapid intervention in response to critical events. In this talk, I will introduce the notion of the Intelligent Monitoring Interfaces needed to solve the data monitoring challenge and early steps our lab is taking towards this vision, employing visualization tools designed for situated contexts and human-AI collaboration.
