AI for Architecture

Thomas Wortmann

May 13, 2024 | 04:00 – 06:00 pm

Artificial Intelligence has gained increasing prominence among architects in recent years. My talk will briefly summarize current developments in artificial intelligence and their significance for architecture. The talk offers examples of the data-based generation of images as well as the rule-based generation of architectural designs and provides a brief overview over ICD/CA’s research on supporting architectural design with AI methods such as optimization, machine learning, and knowledge graphs.

Thomas Wortmann

Tenure-Track Professor Thomas Wortmann directs the Department of Computing in Architecture at the Institute of Computational Design and Construction (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart. He also is a faculty member at the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS). At the Cluster of Excellence Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC), Thomas coordinates the Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Integration and Feedback Control for Co-Design group of research projects.

Thomas holds a Master in Architectural Design from University of Kassel, a Master of Science in Design and Computation from MIT, and a PhD in Architecture and Sustainable Design from Singapore University of Technology and Design. Before joining ICD, Thomas taught at National University of Singapore and held a position at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, China. He researches the application of AI methods—such as AI reasoning, AI planning, supervised learning, optimization, and multi-variate visualization—in architectural design and construction processes and leads the development of Opossum, a machine learning-based optimization tool that has been downloaded more than 13.500 times.
