CONFERENCE

Advances in Architectural Geometry (AAG) is a conference where both theoretical and practical work linked to new geometrical developments is presented. It involves architects, engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, software and algorithms designers and contractors. We aim at connecting researchers from architectural and engineering practices, academia and industry.

AAG has become a reference both in research and in practice and is supported by the direct participation of the most renowned architectural design and engineering offices along with research laboratories.

The symposium is a biennial event. It was held first in 2008 and 2010 in Vienna, 2012 in Paris, 2014 in London, 2016 in Zurich, 2018 in Gothenburg and 2020 in Paris.

In 2023 it will take place in Stuttgart from 04. – 07. October 2023, organized by the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC (Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture).

ABOUT

Geometry lies at the core of the architectural design process. It is omnipresent, from the initial form-finding stages, to novel manufacturing techniques, to the construction, and to post occupancy monitoring. But the role of geometry in architecture and engineering is also continuously evolving.

Geometry increasingly plays a role in modeling environments and processing sensing information. Modern geometric computing provides a variety of tools for the efficient design, analysis, and manufacturing of complex shapes. Besides descriptive geometry controlling form, algorithmic processes play a crucial role in integrating disciplinary input.

On the one hand this opens up new horizons for architecture. On the other hand, the architectural context also poses new problems to geometry. Around these problems the research area of architectural geometry has emerged. It is located at the common border of architecture with applied geometry, computational design, mathematics, and manufacturing.

Eco-Metabolistic Architecture

The ‘Eco-Metabolistic Architecture’ builds a holistic model for biogenic materials in Architecture through three perspectives; the harvested, the composite and the living. It was granted in 2021 by the European Research Council and is led by Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen, professor at the Center for IT and Architecture (CITA).
‘Eco-Metabolistic Architecture’ examines the foundations of a bio-based material paradigm for architecture.
It argues that moving from a current reliance on the non-renewable materials of the geosphere, to the renewable and fundamentally cyclical materials of the biosphere can establish foundations for thinking alternative sustainable building practices. By positioning architecture and the built environment as a particular case for bio-based materials, where the long lifespans of buildings support carbon storage, this project identifies the bottlenecks that limit their adaptation into the way architecture is thought, designed and built.

Architectural design is traditionally understood through the durable and the permanent. This project aims to challenge this foundation and bring forth the fundamental differences that bio-based materials engender. With focus on the embedded lifespans of living materials, the fundamental circularity and degradability of biomass and resulting transformative life cycles of the artefacts that they embody, this project proposes a holistic conceptualisation of architecture as an organism built out of living materials.

We are very pleased to announce that the Future of Construction 2023 Symposium will take place at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, from September 13 to 15, 2023.

The symposium provides a platform to discuss novel Human-Machine Teams for Design and Sustainable Construction. Together we will raise questions about how complementary skills—the accuracy and speed of machines and their ability to crunch large amounts of data, jointly with our capacity as humans to solve problems creatively, flexibly, and collaboratively—can affect the ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable development of the built environment. It is a continuation of a series of events that first took place at ETH Zurich in 2022.

The symposium is organized by Kathrin Dörfler (Professorship of Digital Fabrication), Pierluigi D’Acunto (Professorship of Structural Design), Konrad Nübel (Chair of Construction Process Management), and Christos Chantzaras (Venture Lab Built Environment) of TUM, and co-organized by Michael Bühler (University of Applied Sciences Konstanz), Danielle Griego (ETH Zurich), Norman Hack (Technical University of Braunschweig), Ena Lloret-Fritschi (Università della Svizzera italiana), Stefana Parascho (EPFL), and Thomas Wortmann (University of Stuttgart). It will be held in hybrid mode, with participants from academia, start-ups, and the construction industry.

The very first AdvanceAEC Autumn School will lay the foundation for an annually recurring format. This year’s AdvanceAEC Autumn School is hosted by IntCDC and will be part of the Stuttgart Week of Advancing AEC. It is aimed at early career researchers, e.g. master students, PhD students and postdocs from the partner institutions of the AdvanceAEC network.
In workshops organized by members of the partner institutions, young scientists will have the opportunity to explore theoretical concepts, test practical skills and become familiar with manufacturing processes, programming languages and computer programs. The 2022 courses will include social sciences, computer science and computation, concrete design, carbon concrete structures, robotics and manufacturing. In addition, participation in the CRC 1244 conference is offered. The AdvanceAEC Autumn School will also enable young scientists to get to know each other and to network with members of the partner organizations. On the one hand, networking workshops in the areas of equal opportunity and start-up supporting measures, a poster session for networking among doctoral students and a workshop on career development specifically designed for postdocs and senior research associates (pre-professorship) will be offered. On the other hand, a social program provides opportunities for informal networking. For more information and registration please follow this link!

Please note:

Registration exclusively for members of partner institutions. You have to log into your account to find the registration information.
