date

24 – 28 november 2025

location

TU Wien, Vienna, Austria

workshop objectives

In this workshop, organized in cooperation with the SFB Advanced Computational Design and the TachiLab, participants will work in groups to build foldable pressure driven mechanisms, which should be designed covering a rectangular which allows e.g.
(a) an actuation from its deployed state into a compact one (folding system) and/or
(b) an actuated morphing of its shape and/or
(c) an actuated change of the porosity to act e.g. as shading/ventilation device and/or
(d) an actuated spatial change.

The participants will develop the concepts through digital modeling and physical prototyping and build the table-top size models using digital fabrication tools. Constructed structures will be presented and discussed at the GCD Symposium for novelty of ideas and structural performance. In preparation to the workshop a series of weekly lectures will be given via Zoom starting in October until the workshop.

The interdisciplinary workshop team will provide and share their expert knowledge as well as their long experience, for a collaborative problem-solving workshop. The workshop should be an open space for students, researchers and practitioners to develop interesting ideas and hopefully new collaborations. Therefore, we encourage participants as well as tutors to give lightning talks at the beginning of the workshop.

Attendees will be awarded with 2.5 ECTS credits. For registration and more information please see: https://gcd.tuwien.ac.at/gcd25-workshop

Abstract

Over the past decade, the concept of digital twins has gained widespread adoption across various fields. Initially rooted in space exploration and manufacturing, it has now extended its reach to architecture, engineering, and even traditional construction sites and accessibility.
In this session, we explore the synergy between digital twins and their real-world counterparts. These virtual replicas offer significant benefits, including cost savings, resource optimization, and early detection of deviations. To fully harness their potential, we rely on advanced visual computing techniques.

Recent results and new goals of the SFB Advanced Computational Design

Date

April 8, 2024 | 04:00 – 06:00 pm

Abstract

How to advance design tools and processes in the domain of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) especially for the early design phase, where the biggest impact can be achieved – that’s the main research question addressed by the SFB “Advanced Computational Design”. Though exerting substantial environmental, cultural and economic influence on our society AEC is still among the least digitized industries. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field, on the other hand, is highly innovative, creating digital design tools well-founded in basic research. But these tools often lack relevant domain knowledge, thus hardly meeting designers’ needs, limiting their broad acceptance. With a strong multi- and interdisciplinary team, we have been working on bridging this gap by connecting architecture, engineering, mathematics and computer science. We linked tools for sketching, material and structural modeling, geometric and kinematic paneling to innovative VR design communication, including haptic feedback and realistic lighting. We will extend these connections (with particular focus on sustainability) to a rapid prototyping design process with immediate feedback for complex designs that cannot be handled by current methods
Jointly, in eight sub-projects, the Center for Geometry and Computational Design at TU Wien, researchers from the University of Innsbruck and TU Graz address open problems in AEC and other fields of the creative industries.

Digital Twins living in Smart Worlds – From Reconstruction to Decision Making.

Since the official introduction of the concept in 2014 the ‘digital twin’ has become a ubiquitous means to digitization in practically all domains. Starting out in space and production, covering architecture and engineering, it has gained traction in so far less digitized realms such as conventional construction sites and even forestry. This session will give an overview on how digital twins and their physical counterparts interplay and which methods (of visual computing) are necessary so digital twins can deliver on their promises, as for instance, reduced costs, efficient use of resources, or early detection of target/actual deviations and the planning of respective interventions.

Special Research Programme (SFB) funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)

The main research question addressed by the SFB “Advanced Computational Design” is how to advance design tools and processes through multi- and interdisciplinary basic research in the areas of digital architecture, integrated building design, computer graphics and virtual reality, discrete and applied geometry, and computational mechanics.

Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) shapes our built environment, exerting substantial environmental, cultural and economic influence on society. However, it is among the least digitized industries, still caught in silo-thinking and sequential planning processes. The Information and Communication Technology field, on the other hand, is highly innovative, creating digital design tools that are well-founded in basic research, but often lack relevant domain knowledge, thus hardly meeting designers’ needs.

We will connect architecture, computer science, mathematics and engineering in order to develop advanced computational design tools able to combine implicit and explicit design knowledge. This unique combination of scientific disciplines and collaborative research with strong theoretical foundations aims to bring radical innovation in computational design by allowing immediate feedback already in early design phases and by expanding solution spaces by computing design variants that cannot be found by current methods. Our research is structured in three areas: Design Methodology (A1), Visual and Haptic Design Interaction (A2) and Form Finding (A3).
