The symposium asks:

How can we reconfigure architecture from an idealisation of the new, the permanent and the durable to a new language of fragility and temporality? This symposium asks how a critical enquiry into where our resources arrive from, how they are deployed and what lifespans they engage can change architecture’s material practice. With a new critical positioning of what cascading can become in a rethinking of care, adaptation and repair practice, we ask how building can rethink how, through what and by whom they are built.

The symposium addresses:

Researchers and students, that work on questions of circularity and sustainability and how this extends from questions of design and fabrication to those of resource, building operation, care and adaptation.

FABRICATE 2024 – Creating Resourceful Futures
On April 4 – 6 the international conference FABRICATE 2024 will be held at the Royal Danish Academy, Copenhagen. Co-Chaired by Head of Centre for Information Technology and Architecture Professor Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen and Chair for Biohybrid Architecture Professor Phil Ayres, this fifth edition of FABRICATE will build upon and extend its legacy as a prime place of exchange on the cutting-edge of new forms of design and construction and material thinking in architecture, engineering and building.

FABRICATE 2024 asks how rethinking architectural methods, technology and construction can create a new societal position for the built environment, appointing a particular focus on questions of resource consciousness and bio-based design and fabrication strategies.

The conference is structured around 4 sessions of cutting-edge paper presentations from research and
industry:

•  INTEGRATE: Systems and Context
•  RATIONALISE: Elements and Assemblies

The sessions are each followed by open discussions moderated by:

• Leslie Lok, Director of the Rural-Urban Building Innovation Lab, Cornell University
